Portrait of an amateur actor from the Play of Saint Servatius (Sint-Servaasspel), posing in the cloister yard of the Basilica of Saint Servatius in Maastricht, Netherlands. The play was performed several times at Vrijthof square during the 1916 Pilgrimage of the Relics (Heiligdomsvaart). This 10 or 15-day religious festival is celebrated in Maastricht every seven years and dates back to the Middle Ages. The play was written by Chrétien Mertz with music by Philip Loots, and directed by Alfons Olterdissen. The role of the jester was played by Harie Loontjens, 14 years old, who later became a well known columnist and promotor of Limburgish language and culture.
